Igesund leaves Maritzburg

Pietermaritzburg - Following a spell of unsavory results Maritzburg United coach Gordon Igesund fell on his sword on Tuesday as it was announced he is no longer with the club.

The latest blow for the embattled coach was a 4-0 hammering by his former club Santos on Saturday. Before then, he got some breathing space with a 1-1 away draw to Orlando Pirates.

Overall, the Maritzburg club has managed only three victories in 15 matches with a whopping seven draws and five defeats, leaving the club on 12 position and in danger of missing the MTN8 cut.

In a statement released by the club on Tuesday, it was stated that the resignation came as a surprise but was nevertheless accepted.

“It is with regret that the Board of Directors of Maritzburg United Football Club hereby accepts the resignation of Head Coach, Gordon Igesund.

“Mr Igesund surprisingly tendered his resignation through the club CEO, Mr Afzal Khan at the Club’s weekly management meeting,” the club said.

According to the club, Igesund did not go into details a bout his resignation but “cited personal reasons for his decision which the club fully respects”.

Meanwhile, the club also announced that assistant coach Salie Adams will act as caretaker coach until such time that an appointment of a new head coach is made.
