Igesund: We knew we had to take risks

Cape Town - Gordon Igesund admits that risks had to be taken in the last twenty minutes of SuperSport United's match against Orlando Pirates as they knew what to expect.

Igesund said that his defence was good but expected more higher up on the field.

“We knew what we expected in the last twenty minutes, obviously they had to take risks, and they did that,” Igesund said after the game.

“I thought we defended well, but I wanted us to play a little more higher up on the field, but just the way they played, they pressed us back, and we expected that, but compliments to my defenders.

“They dealt with it. They had a very, very big chance at the end of the day there, which was expected.

“They’re a quality team, they doing fantastic in Africa, and I’m just happy to get a result today.

The United mentor admits that it was very hard-fought win and praised his defenders for coming through to concede any goals from Pirates.

“It was a very very hard-fought win, and the goal last night obviously clinched it for us, but this morning was always going to be difficult, when you playing against a team who have nothing to lose, throw everything forward.

“At one stage when I looked back there they had five players in a row, five defenders, what I would like to have seen us do is punish them and get the second goal when we had the opportunities.

“But credit to the players, it’s easy to talk about it, what they should have done, how they should have done it, but in the end of the day, they defended well and we got the result, what we wanted to get, and I’m very pleased about that.”
