Igesund: PSL title is ours

2012-05-09 14:18

Johannesburg - Moroka Swallows coach Gordon Igesund knows luck will need to be on his side if the Dube Birds are to claim the Premier Soccer League title this season.

Swallows are two points adrift of league leaders Orlando Pirates and will need the Bucs to slip up in their last two matches, against Bloemfontein Celtic at home and Golden Arrows away, and hope they do the business against Platinum Stars at home and Maritzburg United away.

After saving the Soweto side from relegation last season, Igesund immediately talked up a top-eight finish for his side this season, but that talk went out the window when it became apparent that a title chase was on the cards.

Igesund now sees no reason why his side can't complete their phenomenal turn around and claim the PSL title.

He told Business Day: "I think that this league title is meant for us this season and it is there for the taking.

"We have to be very optimistic and believe. Football is a very funny game and anything is possible.

"Look at it this way. Bloemfontein Celtic are peaking at just the right time and I think they are becoming stronger and stronger.

"So let us make sure of winning our own games and then see what happens in the Pirates games."

Swallows next face Stars with Igesund adding in the New Age: "We are left with two big games and we know that Platinum Stars is a strong team with good players so it's going be to be a tough game, but we need to win it.

"I've got to prepare my team right for this game and win at home against Platinum stars.

"We just have to go out there, have a good game and win. Our approach to every game is with the same attitude which is showing all our opponents the respect they deserve."

I love Gordon, i once think he should be the next Bafana coach after Pitso Mosimane fails next Year in the Nation Cup, but he is dreaming. PSL is Pirates's

I like your phrase, dreams do come true. Up The Birds!!!

Make him the Bafana coach long overdue the best coach in South Africa.

May suggest that his caretaker coach job is given to Gavin Hunt.

Gordon is the master, he understands how soccer is played. Also, understands the PSL quite well. He sets his targets, knowing which games to win, and which games to share points. He has lost twice to Chiefs (H&A), lost to Sundowns away and shared points with Pirates (H&A). The rest of the points wins you the league, however, there were unnecessary draws there and there. How I wish Mr Igesund was my Maths and Accounting teacher at Matric, I could have got better grades and I concur with Le below on how the Master Gordon connects with players. A very good teacher.

Igesund has been the best coach in South Africa for years. Time SAFA recognised his love for the game and his great coaching talent.

@Peter. Don't destroy the man. He is only good at club level. By the way, football is unlike rugby where one can just walk straight into national team after displaying a good record at club level. Please don't rush the man, he still have to get his bearings right, including his head. We don't want a coach who shouts from a touchline and remonstrate with players openly. Igesund is known for his temperament.

If wishes were horses...Sorry Mr igesund unfortunately this one's taken. Headed for Parktown !

Igesund is a dreamer. This is the closest he can come to but as for wrestling the league from Pirates, he should forget. Pirates have temperament and experience hence they shoot from all cylinders - something that swallows lacks. The man speaks as if Platinum Stars and Maritzburg United are a walk- over when they are known to be giant killers. Igesund must ask Chiefs and Sundown about the Maritzburg United, which will make him eat the humble pie. Apart from teh fact, that Swallows doesn't have depth and comparable squad like Pirates, Pirates players must be fired-up and psyched for the big one (Championship honours) and know what a draw and/or loose means. Surely, they would not let it slip again after wrestling the first spot from Sundowns again. All that Igesund can hope for runner-up position.
