Cape Town - Mamelodi Sundowns rallied from a goal down to earn a 1-1 draw with St Michel United in the first leg of their CAF Champions League preliminary round clash.

St Michel claimed the league title in Seychelles' top division last season after going unbeaten in 18 games, and they proved just why they are their country's top side as they frustrated their much-fancied opponents at Stade Linite on Saturday.

They had only appeared in the competition once before, as they were knocked out at the preliminary stage of the 2011 edition of the tournament.

However, they look well placed to cause an upset in the second leg after producing a battling performance against Pitso Mosimane's men.

Following a goalless first stanza, the home side broke the deadlock in the 65th minute, sending the home support into wild celebrations.

And with the match heading into the final ten minutes, Sundowns proceeded to lay siege to the St Michel defence in a bid to restore parity.

They eventually got the breakthrough they were looking for on 83 minutes, Khama Billiat bagging the all-important away goal.
