'Downs get win over Zambian champs

Cape Town - Mamelodi Sundowns made it two wins in two matches in their Zambian preseason tour, after edging reigning Zambian Super Division Champions Zesco United 1-0.

A fine performance from Siyanda Zwane and a second half goal from Striker Cuthbert Malajila ensured the 1-0 victory for The Brazilians at the Levy Mwanawase Stadium.

According to the clubs official website, it was Khama Billiat who had the first effort at goal for Sundowns after some enterprising football from Teko Modise and Mzikayise Mashaba.

The Zimbabwean international’s shot was saved by a well positioned Zesco keeper.

Zesco were no pushovers as they launched attack after attack but Sundowns defence did enough to foil the home team’s efforts.

Dennis Onyango was also in top shape as he made two outstanding saves to deny Zesco.

Also starting the match and fitting in like a pair of gloves to the team was Botswana international, Mogakolodi Ngele and Burundi forward, Fiston Abdul.

Fiston came very close 35 minutes into the match but again the Zesco pulled a top drawer save.

Ngele’s touches were very crisp and combined well with Modise to unlock the defence.

Both teams were deadlocked at 0-0 when the referee blew his halftime whistle.

A strong second half start upfront for Sundowns saw Modise nearly scoring the opener, after a good pass from Ngele.

In the 60th minute Pitso Mosimane rung the changes and brought in fresher legs into the park.

Themba Zwane misguided his effort when he headed from an Anthony Laffor cross.

A few minutes later Malajila found the opening goal of the match after getting at the end of a Siyanda Zwane cross.

'Downs continued to dominate ball possession and Malajila came really close to doubling Sundowns’ lead but was denied by the keeper.

Sundowns went on to win the match 1-0 and will now focus on their last training match in Zambia on Thursday before returning to South Africa.
