Downs break transfer record

Pretoria - As the hours drew tantalizingly close to the deadline for the registration of players during the mid-season open window period, Mamelodi Sundowns pulled off a major coup when they signed Ajax Cape Town's speedy winger Franklin Cale.

Although no one is prepared to reveal figures at this stage, www.supersoccer.com has been reliably informed that the man from the Cape flats has not come cheap and chairman John Comitis could have asked for a little over R5-m.

Without doubt Cale at possibly R5.5-m has become the most expensive local player to move to another club and with justification as he has proved during his time at Ikamva that he was worth every cent invested in him with his blistering pace.

Cale had been a target of Sundowns for quite some time and it is said in football circles that once billionaire owner Patrice Motsepe sets his eyes on acquiring a player, he will stop at nothing to get that particular player.

Sundowns signed Cale on a three year contract in what must have cost the mining magnate an arm and a leg after Ajax Cape Town had initially cancelled a deal that could have seen Mabhudi Khenyeza going back to Ikamva in addition to a substantial amount of money.

And early on Tuesday morning it emerged that Orlando Pirates have also come into the picture and offered Ajax the services of winger Bennett Chenene plus an undisclosed amount of money in exchange for Cale.

But the man who publicly admitted that football saved him from a life of drugs and gangsterism has made it clear that if he could not get a move abroad he would welcome an opportunity to wear the green, blue and yellow shirts of Sundowns.

And his dream came true on Tuesday when Sundowns beat the transfer deadline to bring the seep merchant to Chloorkop but it remains to be seen whether he will be included in the squad that play Maritzburg United at Atteridgeville Super Stadium on Wednesday evening.
