Dikwena, Wits share the spoils

Rustenburg - Platinum Stars held Wits to a goalless draw in an Absa Premiership match at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium on Sunday.

The match was a frustrating one for players, coaches and supporters as there were certainly enough opportunities for goals to have been scored at either end of the field.

The sides had plenty of shots in the first half, but only two were on target and they were no trouble for goalkeepers Kabelo Dambe and Moeneeb Josephs.

There was plenty of endeavour and energy from both sides, but a lack of quality and composure in both the final pass and the shooting allowed the defences to boss the first 45 minutes.

The second half followed a similar path, though Stars certainly created chances from which the deadlock should have been broken.

The best went the way of Mahlatsi Makudubela in the 77th minute, as he got on the end of a great cross from the right flank but directed his header wide of the far post from just a couple of metres out.

Wits very nearly claimed a late winner, with Jabu Shongwe’s goal-bound header brilliantly palmed away by Kabelo Dambe to ensure the game ended in a stalemate.

Teams:

Platinum Stars: Dambe, Mabule, Sithole, Gumede, Tshabalala, Makudubela (Diale 84’), Mathe, Khumalo (Nyathi 83’), Ngele, Rodgers, Mabena (Nyanda 79’)
