Cosmos target Maritzburg scalp

Cape Town - Maritzburg United will open their 2015/16 Absa Premiership campaign with a match against newly-promoted Jomo Cosmos at the Harry Gwala Stadium.

Maritzburg ended last season in eighth place, their best finish in the PSL. They claimed 40 points from 30 matches.

The KwaZulu-Natal club won three of their last five matches to end the previous campaign on a high note.

Cosmos finished in second place on the National First Division log last season (53 points from 30 matches) before winning the Promotion Playoffs to earn their spot in the top flight.

The Gauteng-based team will be returning to the PSL for the first time since the 2011/12 season.

In head-to-head stats, Maritzburg and Cosmos have met in eight league matches since 2005/06.

Ezenkosi have three wins compared to two for the Team of Choice, while three matches have been drawn.

Maritzburg have won two of their four home matches against Cosmos, suffering one defeat in the process.

When the clubs last met in the 2011/12 season, the Team of Choice took four points off Ezenkosi, winning 3-1 at home before claiming a 1-1 draw in the return match.

Three of the teams’ last four league matches have ended in draws.

The fixture is scheduled for Monday, August 10.
