Cape Town - Maritzburg United and Jomo Cosmos will meet for their first cup match in the Telkom Knockout last 16 when they clash at the Harry Gwala Stadium.
The teams have only played against one another in league football in the past, with nine top flight meetings to date. United have claimed three wins compared to two for Cosmos, while four matches have been drawn.
One of those four draws arrived earlier this season, with the teams playing out a goalless stalemate in Pietermaritzburg – it was Ezenkosi’s first match back in the Absa Premiership after three years in the National First Division.
Maritzburg United were eliminated in the first round of the Telkom Knockout last season, losing 1-0 away to Kaizer Chiefs.
Cosmos, who won the League Cup in 2002 and 2005 when it was known as the Coca-Cola Cup, last participated in the TKO in 2011 – they were beaten 1-0 in the quarterfinals by Bidvest Wits.
This match will be a meeting of the only two teams in the top flight league which have yet to claim a win this season.
Maritzburg have suffered five straight losses since their stalemate with Cosmos – their most recent defeat was a 4-1 reverse away to Black Aces on September 27.
Ezenkosi have suffered three straight league losses, with their last outing a 2-0 loss at home to Mamelodi Sundowns on September 27.
For one of these two teams, their losing streak will come to an end on October 2 – even if it is by the lottery of a penalty shootout.
Kick-off is at 20:00 on Friday, October 2.
