Cosmos held, face relegation

Durban - Cuthbert Malajila broke Jomo Cosmos hearts as he found the equalising goal for Maritzburg United after Elhadji Samb had given Ezenkosi the lead at the Sinaba Stadium on Saturday afternoon, as the teams played to a 1-1 draw.

A goal by Samb early into the second half was cancelled out by Maritzburg United’s Malajila as Jomo Cosmos failed to get the three points they required.

The first real chance of the match came as late as the 38th minute when Cosmos had a chance to score from a free-kick opportunity when it was drilled right-footed by Haskins, but missed to the right.

The first half of the match had little action as both teams were cautious and failed to take an attacking approach to the match.

Whatever Cosmos coach Jomo Sono said to the players in the change room worked as his side took the lead in the ten minutes after the break.

Samb’s right-footed shot from 18-yards out found the bottom-right of the net to make it 1-0 to Cosmos in the 55th minute.

In the 71st minute the visitors had Sono fuming as the Team of Choice got the equaliser. Felix Obada crossed from the left wing and he found the head of in-form forward Malajila, who placed the ball into bottom-right corner of goal from 12-yards.

Cosmos soon went for the winner and three minutes later in the 74th a right-footed shot by striker Siyabonga Nontshinga from 25-yards out on the right channel missed to the left.

The draw means that the highest position Cosmos can get to is 15th place which is the relegation/promotion playoff spot, but they have an inferior goal difference compared to Santos who are directly above them. Ezenkosi seem likely to be competing in the National First Division next season.

No! I think the smart thing to do is start again with a younger skipper ...

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
