Cape Town - The Maritzburg United squad was in unanimous agreement that teamwork was the crucial aspect of their performance in Sunday's 1-0 win over Bloemfontein Celtic.

The Team of Choice were on the back foot for much of the encounter but were able to hang on to their early lead.

Kurt Lentjies scored the decisive goal in the ninth minute of the game and on-loan defender Kwanda Mngonyama put in a man-of-the-match performance to help protect the lead.

However, both players stressed it was a solid team effort that saw them through in the end.

"I think this Man of the Match is a team effort. I was not alone, we fought together for the three points and managed to get it," Mngonyama said.

"I think it was a team performance. We played well as a unit. The coach drilled us in the week to play without the ball and we did just that," added Lentjies.

"He encouraged us to work on set-pieces and it worked out today."

Goalkeeper, and captain for the day in place of the injured Ashley Hartog, Virgil Vries shared the sentiment of his teammates.

"You know, it was a very hard-fought victory we got here," he said.

"We played as a team. We only had one mission and that was to get the three points.

"So when we got the goal we had to make sure we closed all the doors."
