Cape Town - Chippa United put an end to Platinum Stars’ five match winning run with a 2-1 at the Athlone Stadium on Tuesday evening.
The game was filled with incidents and chances on goal from the start, with the Chilli Boys having the first chance on goal in the opening few minutes when James Okwuoso hit a first time volley over the bar after a corner kick routine.
Stars were then to create a succession of chances as Ngele Mogakolodi went close from out on the left before Thuso Phala’s powerful drive across goal was well saved by Daouda Kassaly in goal for Chippa.
The home side were to go in front in spectacular fashion on the half hour mark when former Cosmos midfielder Larry Cohen fired in a screamer into the top corner from all of 30-yards out.
But five minutes before the break the scores were levelled when Martin Moonsamy rolled a back-pass past Kassaly and into the net for an own goal.
The second half saw Dikwena starting the stronger team for the first 10 minutes before the Chilli Boys started to come back into the game as Brent Carelse became more and more influential.
Chances though remained rare at either end until 20 minutes to go when Welcome Qalanto smashed an indirect free kick into the bar from 12-yards out.
Then with just two minutes to go a perfectly flighted free kick from Diego Brown found the head of Andile Mbenyane, who nodded home for a big win for the Cape side.
