Cape Town - Chippa United kept alive their hopes of regaining their place in the Premier Soccer League with a 1-0 win over Santos in a promotional playoff tie at Cape Town Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Andile Mbenyane’s first half strike proved to be the difference between the sides on the day. The loss for Santos means that the People’s team will continue life in the National First Division next season.
The two sides headed into the encounter knowing that only a win will keep their chances alive of gaining promotion to South Africa’s top flight. A draw between the two Capetonian sides would mean that Black Aces win the play-offs.
Chippa started the game the brighter of the two sides with Phumelele Bhengu going close with a curling free kick in the 12th minute of the game.
The Chilli Boys early pressure was rewarded seven minutes later thanks to an Andile Mbenyane strike. William Twala rounded Sachin Dawood before laying it on a plate for Mbenyane who in turn stroked the ball into the back of the net.
Tashrique Goldman was virtually untested during the first 45, with Santos finding it difficult to break down an organised Chippa defence.
Santos started the second stanza the brighter of the two sides as they went in search of the equaliser.
Vuyisile Wana and Nasief Morris went close to levelling matters for the People’s Team in quick succession.
First in the 53rd minute, Wana benefited from a poor clearance before striking the ball at goal, his shot took a wicked deflection before cannoning off the bar.
Three minutes later Morris’s curling free-kick attempt was brilliantly stopped by Goldman.
Morris almost levelled matters in spectacular fashion three minutes before the customary 90 after his bicycle attempt was cleared off the line by Rudiger Gilbert.
This chance proved to be Santos last chance of the match, the People’s Team will be hoping that it is a case of third time lucky next season.
