Kaizer Chiefs made their best start to a Premiership season since 1996 as Mandla Masango and Kingston Nkhatha guided the Soweto giants to a 2-0 win over SuperSport United at FNB Stadium on Saturday evening.
Masango scored his third league goal of the season and his fifth in eight appearances, before Nkhatha made sure of the three points when he slotted home to get his tally up-and-running for the 2014/15 season.
A difficult week for United, one in which they got rid of their coach, Cavin Johnson, the result did little to ease tensions as the Pretoria outfit headed into the game coachless and in desperate need of a win after three losses from their four opening league fixtures.
A tense derby-like feel to the opening half-hour saw few chances as neither side gained any advantage going forward.
Chiefs were made to wait until a minute before the break to have their first promising chance at goal.
George Maluleka's accurate effort drew a fine save from goalkeeper Ronwen Williams, who palmed away his former teammate's snapshot.
The lack of chances continued in the second 45 but Chiefs looked more likely to make something happen.
A quiet opening half made way for a more lively exchange for Williams after the interval, as Masango, Nkhatha and Maluleka kept the shot-stopper busy with regular assaults on his goal-box.
The table-toppers showed their worth and eventually broke the deadlock in the 64th minute as Masango rounded off a move he had started.
Masango picked up a loose ball outside the area, before weaving past a defender and laid off a pass to Reneilwe Letsholonyane, who touched it straight back to Masango, who curled his shot into the far corner.
The goal gave Chiefs the freedom to go in search of a second and before long Nkhatha netted his first of the season.
Letsholonyane dragged a shot wide, which bounced awkwardly for the SuperSport defence, while Nkhatha waited at the far post. The striker went unnoticed and simply tapped home to put the hosts in the driver's seat with 20 minutes to play.
A late chance for Maluleka almost resulted in a third for Chiefs, the post denying the in-form midfielder a superb chipped effort which struck the crossbar and narrowly stayed out.
