Chiefs first signing revealed

Johannesburg - Kaizer Chiefs have made their first signing since winning the league and cup ‘double’ last month as they begin to prepare for the new season.

According to the supersport.com website, but instead of a ‘big-name’ signing as many supporters might have expected, given all the prize money the club have garnered with their recent achievements, Chiefs have handed a three year contract to an unknown 19-year-old from youth level.

The signing of Simphiwe Mtsweni has not yet been officially announced by the champions but has been confirmed by his old club Stars of Africa.

Mtsweni is a left back described as having a strong ability to overlap and add attack to his defensive qualities.

He will compete for a place in the squad against Bafana Bafana regular Tsepo Masilela and Keegan Ritchie, who signed from Moroka Swallows two years ago but has not made the desired impact.

Masilela is the first choice for South Africa but has dodgy knees which have kept him from this month’s World Cup assignments against the Central African Republic and Ethiopia.

The Stars of Africa academy, which is run by former Chiefs’ assistant coach Farouk Khan, has already produced two players, currently in the South African national team and also playing abroad in Sweden – Tokelo Rantie and May Mahlangu.
