Chiefs draw yet again

Durban - Kaizer Chiefs ended any hopes of a late challenge for the Premiership title when they notched their third successive draw in 2010 when they drew 0-0 against Golden Arrows at the new Moses Mabhida Stadium on Tuesday night.

For Arrows the point was their first in four matches and might help then earn a place in the top eight at the end of the season and defend their MTN8 title next season.

Both coaches Chiefs Vladimir Vermezovic and Manqoba Mngqithi rang the changes for this match with Amakhosi’s Serbian mentor making five changes from the side that drew 2-2 against bottom club Jomo Cosmos last weekend.

Vermezovic dropped his two Bafana Bafana stars Siphiwe Tshabalala, Reneilwe Letsholonyane and winger Abia Nale.

Arrows brought back their new Bafana central defender Siyabonga Sangweni and goalkeeper Thulasizwe Khuzwayo.

It was Chiefs who had the edge in the opening half where they created more chances and were unlucky not to have taken the lead when their Zimbabwean striker Knowledge Musona hit the woodwork in the 42nd minute.

Musona was busy during the opening half and was wide of the target with a brave attempt in the 15th minute. Four minutes later Musona’s strike partner Nkosinathi Nhleko had his shot deflected after he connected a tremendous cross from his captain Jimmy Tau.

Arrows best attempt produced a fine save from Arthur Bartman, who kept Bafana number one Itumeleng Khune on the bench, when the veteran keeper did well to block a well aimed shot form Njabulo Manqana on 21 minutes.

A minute later Tau did brilliantly in cover defence when he managed to rob Richard Henyekane of the ball when the Arrows striker was racing for goal.

Mandla Masango who was one of the players brought back into the starting lineup by Vermezovic headed just wide of the post in the 26th minute. Two minutes later Masango volleyed over the crossbar from 20 metres.

Arrows midfielder Ntlantla Zothwane miskicked when he had the goal at his mercy in the 36th minute. Nhleko was fractionally off target with a powerful close range shot after another good pass from overlapping right back Tau in the 39th minute and three minutes later Musona hit the upright.

Arrows looked more serious and took the game to Chiefs after the break.

Thokozani Mshengu wasted a great chance in the 50th minute when he beat the offside trap, raced for goal but instead of drawing Bartman and picking his spot the Arrows midfielder panicked and blasted well wide of the target.

A minute later Mshengu got a second bite of the cherry when he latched onto a through ball from Zothwane only this time Bartman raced off his line and cleared the danger.

Mshengu completed a hat-trick of embarrassing misses in the 56th minute when he skinned Valery Nahayo who was making his first appearance of the season for Chiefs and again tamely shot wide when he should have at least hit the target or laid the ball to unmarked Henyekane.

Arrows were carving the slow Amakhosi defence and it took a brilliant save from Bartman to prevent Zothwane opening the scoring in the 58th minute.

At the other end Khuzwayo prevented Masango getting the breakthrough for Chiefs in the 67th minute. Nhleko was wide on 77 minutes while Henyekane wasted a chance in the 85th minute when he opted for a long rage effort instead of laying off the ball to a better placed teammate.

Then two minutes later Zothwane headed tamely at Bartman when the Arrows midfielder should have done better from close range.
