Johannesburg - Kaizer Chiefs edged Mamelodi Sundowns 2-1 in their Premiership match at FNB Stadium on Wednesday evening, courtesy of two goals in seven minutes.
After a goalless first 45 minutes, the game clicked into action with Chiefs scoring seven minutes after the break with Siyabonga Nkosi netting for the home side.
In the 58th minute, Chiefs found themselves 2-0 up on Sundowns, Kingston Nkatha was the scorer this time for the AmaKhosi as they looked to have sealed the result.
Johan Neeskens's men had other ideas though, as they replied with a goal three minutes later through an unusual goal from Clayton Daniels.
It was to be the end of the flurry of goals, and the home side were able to hold out for a well-deserved victory which keeps their 100 percent win record intact in the early league proceedings this season.
Chiefs began the league season with a huge 6-0 victory away to AmaZulu, with striker Bernard Parker netting four goals, while Sundowns recorded a 1-0 victory over Chippa United.
The first shot for Chiefs came in the fifth minute. Tefu Mashamaite reeled off a long range attempt but Wayne Sandilands in the Sundowns goal had it covered.
In the 11th minute Chiefs came close to opening the scoring but the final pass was lacking. Siyabonga Nkosi unlocked the Downs defence with a bustling run on the left side of the box, drawing Sandilands and a defender away from goal, but his cross could not find a teammate as the danger was cleared.
The Brazillians' first good effort on goal came in the 16th minute.
Teko Modise was responsible for a scorching long range attempt, but Chiefs keeper and captain Itumeleng Khune threw himself into the air to pull off an acrobatic save to keep the scores level.
Siphiwe Tshabala showed good pace with the ball and in the 32nd minute made a good run into the box, but again, the final cross into the area was not delivered.
Chiefs began the second half with a much clearer strategy and looked confident on attack for the first time in the match. The resulting pressure was quickly rewarded for the home team as they scored the opener in the 52nd minute.
Nkosi ran through three Downs players before producing a superb finish from a tight angle to give Chiefs a 1-0 lead.
In the 58th minute, Chiefs doubled their lead. From a corner Nkatha was on hand to head home from close range to make it 2-0 to Chiefs.
Sundowns responded almost immediately and pulled a goal back three minutes later. In by far the most bizarre goal of the night, Daniels found the back of the net. His shot from the edge of the area had Khune beaten, but the ball struck the post before hitting the Chiefs keeper in the head, causing the ball to rebound into the net and make the score 2-1.
