Chapman double stuns Ajax

Cape Town - Two late strikes by Ryan Chapman secured a 2-0 win for Bidvest Wits over Ajax Cape Town at the Cape Town Stadium on Wednesday night.

The game started tentatively with neither side showing too much ambition on attack.

Wits had the first chance of the game when some sloppy defence from Ajax allowed Sibusisio Vilakazi to get a shot in on goal, but he dragged the effort wide.

The game remained a somewhat scrappy affair, with chances a rarity - the next time a real opportunity came was in the 27th minute when Vilakazi side-footed wide from Ryan Chapman’s free kick.

Ajax had a moment of potential promise in the 32nd minute when George Maluleka made an exciting run, but one touch too many allowed OJ Mabizela to sneak in for the challenge.

But the next chance again fell the way of Wits as Sifiso Vilakazi let rip from 20-yards, narrowly missing the far upright.

Five minutes after the break the Cape side had a decent chance on the break, but Fanteni’s effort was well saved by Energy Murambadoro, who also saved the follow up from Sici Shelembe.

Soon after Sander Westerveld showed good reflexes to keep out Sibusiso Vilakazi’s deflected shot at the other end.

Substitute Lebohang Manyama had a great chance with his first touch, but sent his 61st minute header over the bar.

With ten minutes to go Manyama put in a lovely cross for Fanteni, but his header on the stretch was off the mark.

Ajax were to pay the price as Wits immediately broke up field and scored through Chapman, who controlled a cross and banged in from a tight angle.

Things got worse for the home side five minutes later when Chapman was given the freedom of the box to rifle past a helpless Westerveld.
