Celtic, Chiefs in stalemate

Bloemfontein - Bloemfontein Celtic and Kaizer Chiefs played to a goalless draw in their Absa Premiership match at the Seisa Ramabodu Stadium on Saturday evening.

A point each was a fair result from a game that saw each side dominate a half - neither was able to capitalise on the periods when they were on top, despite creating some decent scoring opportunities.

Apart from an early long range effort by winger Phenyo Mongala that forced Itumeleng Khune into a smart save, Phunya Sele Sele hardly threatened in an attacking sense in the first 45 minutes.

Instead it was Chiefs who enjoyed the majority of possession and they duly created a handful of chances, the best of which fell to defender Tefu Mashamaite. He got on the end of a Siphiwe Tshabalala cross from a short corner kick but his downward header bounced into the ground and looped over the crossbar.

The home team were far better after the break and began to force the Amakhosi onto the back foot. Their best opportunity arrived eight minutes after the restart when Mongala got in behind the defence but opted to cut the ball back rather than shoot - Clifford Mulenga put his shot wide of the target.

From that point the game was open ended and both teams created further half chances. Though it remained goalless all the way to full time, there was always the sense that a goal was just around the corner.

The result sees Chiefs move back to the top of the Absa Premiership standings - temporarily at least. They top the log on goal difference from Ajax Cape Town, though they could be knocked off pole position by Mamelodi Sundowns and/or SuperSport United in what remains of the weekend.
