Pirates run riot against Ajax

Soweto - A brace by Lehlohonolo Majoro as well as goals from Siyabonga Sangweni and Kermit Erasmus handed the Soweto giants a reason to cheer about when they beat Ajax Cape Town 4-0 on Saturday night at Orlando Stadium.

As it happened: Pirates v Ajax

The win takes the Sea Robbers to position five on the log standings with 21 points whilst the Cape Town side remain at position four with one point difference.

Although the Urban Warriors’ coach, Roger de Sa, was targeting revenge for their Telkom Knockout Cup 4-1 drubbing to Pirates, the hosts were too hot to handle for the visitors as they started like a house on fire.

The Buccaneers exchanged neat passes in the middle of the park between Oupa Manyisa, Sifiso Myeni and Mpho Makola but they couldn’t break the Urban Warriors defence and beat Anssi Jaakkola.

On the other hand, the stage was set for the battle between Sangweni and Nathan Paulse with the defender winning the battles. Pirates’ goalkeeper, Brighton Mhlongo was the spectator for most part of the first half.

In the first 20 minutes, the hosts were all over Ajax and a clear chance was presented for Majoro with a pass by Mpho Makola but his effort was blocked by the keeper for a corner.

Towards the 40th minute, Majoro picked his partner Lennox Bacela but again the Urban Warriors shot stopper denied him.

The visitors lost confidence in the last five minutes of the first half as they resorted to long balls. The hosts were unfortunate to have nothing to show for their dominance as they both headed to the tunnel with no goal.

After the interval, Pirates were rewarded with a goal courtesy of Majoro’s goal in the 57th minute when he tapped in a loose ball in the box beating Jaakkola. Three minutes later, Major doubled his tally as he met Myeni’s cross after substitute, Erasmus’ attempt was saved by the keeper and the former AmaZulu man finished with ease.

Another corner by Makola found its way to defender Sangweni’s path and he made it three for the Soweto side. The hosts showed more hunger and with one minute to go, Erasmus received a long pass from Sangweni and managed to beat Aidan Jenniker on a one-one-one before coolly passing the ball into the net.
