Bucs edge Downs in thriller

Johannesburg - Orlando Pirates extended their lead at the PSL summit with an entertaining 2-1 win over Mamelodi Sundowns on Saturday night.

Katlego Mashego's penalty and Thulasizwe Mbuyane's header on the stroke of half time was enough to ensure Mabhuti Khenyeza's lovely backheel late in the second half was mere consolation.

The Brazilians enjoyed most of the possession in the encounter, but Bucs used their time on the ball more effectively and made their intentions clear from the onset as 'Mahoota' forced a sharp save from Wayne Sandilands in the third minute.

Tlou Segolela played a neat pass to Andile Jali, who lofted the ball over the defence to Mashego, who shot powerfully but the Sundowns stopper was equal to the task.

With 12 minutes on the clock, Segolela won a spot kick as he floored Method Mwanjale with his pace and the Zimbabwe defender hacked him down in the box.

Mashego stepped up to take it and sent Sandilands the wrong way to hand Bucs the lead.

With half time just a minute away, a short corner caught the Brazilians off guard and went out to Clifford Ngobeni, who put a delightful cross through to Mbuyane.

The striker, who botched a headed chance earlier in the encounter, made no mistake this time as he placed his robust effort past Sandilands.

Then with time running out, Khenyeza met a ball played in to him at the near post from a short corner with a backheel that left Josephs stranded.

No! I think the smart thing to do is start again with a younger skipper ...

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
