Buccaneers plunder City

Polokwane - Orlando Pirates have hammered Polokwane City 3-0 in their Absa Premiership match at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane on Saturday afternoon.

Kermit Erasmus, Thabo Qalinge and Lehlohonolo Majoro scored the goals that earned the Buccaneers valuable points away from home.

Pirates goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa denied City the lead in the third minute as his dive kept out a glancing Essau Kanyenda header from a Jabu Maluleke cross.

Benson Mhlongo was booked for dissent after the referee Thabo Nkosi awarded a freekick to Pirates for a foul on Erasmus who looked to have gone down too easily in the 14th minute.

Mpho Makola blasted the ball against the wall from the resultant freekick and fired the rebound wide off target.

Kanyenda had the ball in the back of the net for Polokwane but the assistant referee's flag was up for offside in the 24th minute.

The best opening chance for the visitors came in the 26th minute as goalkeeper Dino Visser parried an Erasmus corner into the path of Oupa Manyisa who unleashed a shot across goal but Ayanda Gcaba scooped the ball over the cross bar.

In the 30th minute Patrick Phungwayo played a low cross to Makola who sold the defenders a dummy and the ball fell in the path of Erasmus who finished with aplomb to give the Bucs the lead.

Phungwayo was at it again in the 34th minute as he made a good run on the left but his cross was blocked by Elias Ngwepe, who was there to make the clearance for Polokwane.

Qalinge doubled the lead with a rocket that gave goalkeeper Visser no chance in the 43rd minute after being well setup by Makola.

In the second half defensive midfielder Issa Sarr replaced the more attacking Makola and striker Lehlohonolo Majoro came in for Erasmus.

Pirates were forced to make another change with Daine Klate coming on for goalscorer Qalinge who limped off injured after a challenge from City defender Thapelo Tshilo.

Polokwane should have pulled one back in the 75th minute, Linda Shiba found himself with only goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa to beat, but the City forward lacked composure and his shot sailed over the cross bar.

In the 86th minute, Sifiso Myeni did well to beat his marker and released Klate whose shot flew over the cross bar.

Klate made up for the earlier miss with a brilliant through ball for Majoro to score the team's third goal in the 87th minute. It was Buccaneers' second win of the season after they thumped Sundowns 3-0 midweek.

For Polokwane it was their fourth loss in five matches having registered one win so far in the season.
