Benni given the green light

Johannesburg - Orlando Pirates medical staff have confirmed veteran striker Benni McCarthy will be fit to feature in their remaining PSL and CAF Champions League matches.

According to the Footbal411 website, the former Porto and Blackburn striker has suffered an assortment of injuries this season, his last appearance came against Zambian outfit Zanaco on the16th of March and is yet to play for the Bucs this year.

Pirates administration head, Senzo Mazingiza, who confirmed the news McCarthy would return soon, added that he feels the veteran's experience will benefit the younger players in the squad.

"I can confirm Benni has regained his fitness level and is ready to start playing," he told the Sowetan.

"We are happy to have him back in the team. Benni is an experienced player and a role model to the youngsters in the team.

"We have to start winning games after six consecutive league draws by beating Wits. The win over DR Congo's TP Mazembe has brought high hopes in the camp.

"We went through all sorts of huge challenges, playing against some of the African soccer giants from Nigeria, Tunisia and Congo Brazzaville."

Mazingiza believes the Buccaneers have what it takes to get a result when they ravel to the Congo for the return leg of their CAF Champions second-round second-leg clash with TP Mazembe.

"I believe in this team that we will do well in Lubumbashi against TP Mazembe in two weeks time (in a return match).

"TP Mazembe have a history of scoring an avalanche of goals at home, like they did when they hammered Mochudi Centre Chiefs from Botswana 6-0 three weeks ago.

"That does not worry us (though), we will neutralise them in their own backyard too. Many people will only start believing in us in terms of winning this tournament once we have eliminated TP Mazembe."
