Benni: I wanted the best

2011-08-02 14:10

Johannesburg - Benni McCarthy has signed a two-year contract with Orlando Pirates and the former Bafana Bafana striker has told the Siya crew that joining Bucs is one of the highlights in his playing career.

He told the Siya crew that he wanted to come back home and play for the best team in the country.

"It is good coming back home and joining Orlando Pirates. They are one of the top teams not only here in South Africa but the whole continent. I wanted to play for the best team and I wanted to win things with the best team.

“Pirates have the biggest supporters base and I have figured out that I can still play for a few more years to come. I have learnt a lot from playing in Europe and now it is time for me to give back to the country that made me what I am.

“Looking at the team there are many good players and we can achieve a lot with the team that we have at the moment," the former Ajax Amsterdam striker concluded.

Orlando Pirates have announced the signing of former FC Porto, Blackburn Rovers and West Ham footballer Benni McCarthy.

      Gomolemo Tshwaro - 2011-08-02 14:26

C'mon now loervijou dont be like that man. The man wanted the best there is. Now you watch them go for the 2nd star, cause they are the only team that can bring it.

  • JustinD - 2011-08-02 14:27

You are only here because you cant find a team overseas that is prepared to put up with your holia than thou attitude....."giving back to the country that made me" hahahahahahaahahahahaaha you lie like a cheap watch.

Johannesburg - Benni McCarthy has "singed"a two-year contract with Orlando Pirates .....yep he was a hit maker in 1997 with Halakasha but now he signed the contract :)

  • Teekay - 2011-08-02 14:41

welcome to the home of champs Benni......

  • Mark - 2011-08-02 14:42

Really Benni? how can it be a highlight when you have played for Westham, Blackburn and Porto. This is a huge step down in your career, not a highlight. You've been put out to pasture by the EPL. You are really with Pirates because you cannot find an overseas club that will pay you high salary. No disrespect to Pirates fans intended

      shoutout - 2011-08-02 14:46

Yip! His sell by date IS NEAR.

      Dilika - 2011-08-02 15:52

Eish shoutout you are a generous man. His sell-by date is not NEAR but is long PAST. Clubs "buy in" players but West Ham had to "buy-out" Benni because nobody else wanted him. I am not surprised though he joined Pirates, this is a club that fired a coach for winning trophies.

      AjAxxxx - 2011-08-02 16:04

You must read it in context Mark. Most players, after 33, move to smaller clubs to end their career. Its normal, for instace Nicky Butt, Teddy Sheringham, to name a few. For a player to come play at home is usually very normal. Your'e comment is idiotic.

      IandI - 2011-08-02 16:35

I think he should beef up(pun intended) and play scrum for the Bokke maybe?

      Pogiso Moeketsane - 2011-08-03 08:56

You r stupid mark. Benni has neva played in da PSL n there was an article sometime in 1998 where he said one day he would like to play at home for a team like Pirates or Chiefs. He's refering to him playing football for the best team in his home country, even a five year old can understand that.

  • THABO - 2011-08-02 14:46

    ...............and you got the worst!

  • Spinnie - 2011-08-02 14:57

Benni could have been great but fell in to "I want everything for free" trap and didn't want to work hard for it.... pity. Like I said could have been a great.

      HagenDan - 2011-08-03 15:20

I reckon he got on his way to greatness...Bafana Bafana's top all-time scorer, champions league winner (single handedly destroying Manchester United at Old Trafford on the way), etc. Not too shabby, considering.

  • Kari - 2011-08-02 15:07

This does NOT make me happy ... Benni is a prima-donna and a trouble-maker ... I really don't know why Pirates had to sign him :(((((((((((((((

  • ecm - 2011-08-02 15:08

a fat pirate there just for the money - no job overseas - next best is lower grade PSL

  • Treble Man - 2011-08-02 15:09

When his fit, he can command the 18 arear...Pirates playing beuatiful football at the moment but goals vokol, perhaps Benni is the solution. Now die pope moot dans

welcome home Benny I can't wait to c u play... all the best..

  • ProfDoc18 - 2011-08-02 15:23

Benni please 'refrase'. You wanted the second best. If you were looking for the best please check the statistics of SA football then you will see. Obviously the best Team decided to sign Parker since they are serious about their future & you had to settle for the second best.

      mpho30 - 2011-08-02 15:49

The statistics of SA football says only one team has been able win CAF while others have not been able to even get to the final. Only one team has played in the Club World cup representing Africa, while others have not. Only one team is labled a 'Superbrand' along with Proteas and Springbok...while others are not...seems like Parker (talented as he is) chose the second best, and according to the most recent league standing he chose the third best team.

  • sbusiso.b.maboa - 2011-08-02 15:27

Irregardless of your history boet. You still our best. Make us(OP) proud.

  • MIKE - 2011-08-02 15:29

Pirates play a good soccer, however it always seemed as if we where missing a striker, someone who really know the back of the net, look at the last game we had with chiefs, we ended-up going to penalties to win the game- hopefully Benni will change this. aweee MABHAKABHAKA, we bringing fire this season again. Mike Manzingana

  • MIKE - 2011-08-02 15:35

we where always short of a good striker someone who really knows the back of the net, look at our last game with chiefs we had to go to penalties to win after dominating chiefs the whole entire 90 min.Hopefully Benni will be a difference maker, Khoza have stated listening to us thank you Khoza, we bringing fire this season again-awee MABHAKABHAKA

Welcome home Benni.... I for one am glad at your decision to end your career in SA. U could have chose Asia or MLS in the states. Thanks Benni.

  • TheGeneral_Himself - 2011-08-02 16:34

Welcome to the Buccaneer Family Benni...

  • Francois le Roux - 2011-08-02 17:02

The whole African Continent is going to run circles around you FATTY!!! Hope you use Pirates just as you used Ajax.

  • Setshutshu - 2011-08-02 17:35

Welcome to Pirates Benny, we're going to rock the PSL. They can talk, but they can't break you. Do your best and score goals, and let's see what they'll say then. I'm definite all these detractors have hit rock bottom in their lives, and didn't manage to get up, now they're bitter you managed to pick up the pieces and moved forward. Forward Siyaya! Backwards will be the rest of the clubs who have the same mentality of these idiotic fans.

  • G - 2011-08-02 17:39

“Pirates have the biggest supporters base . . . " Is this guy aware he didn't actually join Kaizer Chiefs?

  • jan du preeaz - 2011-08-02 21:53

  • Mziwozuko - 2011-08-05 05:08

I think Beni must b given another chance. There's nothing wrong with his move. Ndlandya, Mbesuma, Ndlovu etc, & recently Parker did it. Why cant he do it? & recently Parker did it. Why cant he do it?
