Baxter: Title race is over

Johannesburg - Kaizer Chiefs head coach Stuart Baxter concedes that the Premier Soccer League title is firmly in the hands of Mamelodi Sundowns, with just two games remaining in the season.

According to the football411 website, Amakhosi's 1-1 draw with relegation-threatened Free State Stars on Wednesday night means the Brazilians head into the final rounds of the campaign with a four-point lead, and, as a result, a win next time out against SuperSport United will see them crowned champions.

Speaking after the draw with Ea Lla Koto, Baxter conceded the result was a bitter pill to swallow, but that there was no room for excuses.

"Naturally disappointed," the Englishman commented when asked how he felt after the match.

"Disappointed that when we played against a team that played very defensively, and we at last start moving the ball better, and having better movement around their penalty area, that we unlock them and get a goal in front, I expect us to run the game out, I don’t expect us to give away a goal and after that.

"We can stand here after games and make a lot of excuses and sometimes as coaches we stand here and spin it and we know we’re misleading people," he added.

"I just think that was a game we knew we needed to win, we didn’t do it. Why? The reasons would just sound like excuses.

"I think it’s better that I just say I’m disappointed, I’m sure the lads are.

"If Sundowns don’t win it now, then it will be a total disaster for them. If they can give this away from where they are now, then they’ll probably all want a transfer or be finished with football!"
