Arrows shot down again

Atteridgeville - Golden Arrows suffered a second successive defeat at the start of the 2011/12 Absa Premiership season, succumbing 2-1 away to SuperSport United.

Abafana Bes’thende went into the match against United at the Lucas Moripe Stadium having been beaten 3-0 at home in their league opener, but they were unable to change their fortunes after Mame Niang scored an 83rd minute winner for the home side.

The only bright spot for Arrows was a first goal for the club by new striker Katlego Mashego, who levelled matters at 1-1 early in the second half after SuperSport’s Atusaye Nyondo had opened the scoring just before the break.

Nyondo was the dominant figure in the first half and had several opportunities to put his side ahead in the early stages, the best of which saw Arrows goalkeeper Helton da Rocha pull off a great save in the 14th minute.

Arrows also had their attacking moments in the first half, with Katlego Mashego and Collins Mbesuma forming a potent partnership that were a handful for centre-backs Nasief Morris and Morgan Gould.

However, Nyondo scored his first goal in a SuperSport shirt on the stroke of half time, leaving the score 1-0 in favour of the hosts at the break.

Arrows were quick to come up with an equaliser in the second half, with Mashego heading home from Siyabonga Nkosi’s cross in the 51st minute to make it 1-1. United coach Gavin Hunt would have furious with a rare bout of slack defending from his side.

United almost restored their lead just three minutes after conceding, with Anthony Laffor rattling the crossbar with a header after meeting Tebogo Langerman’s cross from the left flank.

Nyondo faded as the second half wore on and was replaced by Mame Niang just before the hour mark. The Senegalese striker’s first contribution was a headed attempt on goal that drew a decent save out of da Rocha in the 69th minute.

Two minutes later United again hit the woodwork, with midfielder John Arwuah blasting his shot against the crossbar. The Ghanaian really should have scored to put the hosts back in the lead but failed to find the back of the net.

SuperSport certainly looked the likelier scorers as the game entered its final stages, but Arrows provided a couple of scares themselves, particularly when Nkosi headed just wide of the near post after meeting Mzivukile Tom’s cross in the 80th minute.

But the hosts finally came good on their attacking promise with seven minutes of regulation time left when Niang got on the end of a fine cross from Laffor and scored with a trademark header to put SuperSport 2-1 up.
