Cape Town - Andre Arendse, will announce his retirement from the beautiful game soon.
The SuperSport United goalkeeper, who is regarded as one of the best shot stoppers in South Africa, has set a new record in domestic football.
At 42 he is the only player to have won five league medals for four different teams in his career. He won his first title with Cape Town Spurs in 1994, followed by Santos in 2001, Mamelodi Sundowns in 2006 and SuperSport in the past two seasons.
According to a high-ranking source in the club, Arendse believes that this is the right time to hang up his gloves.
"He's won everything any player can dream of winning. He achieved a lot in this game, he won the league title with different teams so he believes that there is nothing left to win. That's why he has decided to hang up his gloves," said our source.
Aresnse is expected to announce his retirement before the FIFA Confederations Cup next month.
SuperSport United boss, Stan Matthews, confirmed that Arendse has retired and added that they offered him a position at the team but the offer was declined as Arendse wants to focus on his television career and business.
"We want to wish him all the best in his career. He has achieved a lot in football and did well at his age. On behalf of the team we want to wish him all the best," said Matthews.
