AmaZulu topple Platinum Stars

Rustenburg - AmaZulu claimed a 1-0 victory over the 10-men of Platinum Stars in their Absa Premiership clash at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium on Wednesday night.

It was a dismal outing for Owen da Gama’s men, who not only had to play for over an hour with 10 men, but managed to miss a penalty too soon after the sending off of Reuben Thebakang.

The pivotal moment of the game came on 32 minutes when Thebakang rode his luck once too often and received his marching orders for a second booking, just as the home side were dictating the play.

Despite the set-back, Stars should have been ahead when their former goalkeeper Tapuwa Kapini fouled Thuso Phala in the area for a clear penalty.

Namibian international Henrico Botes, who was an injury doubt before the game, stepped up to take the spot-kick, but sent his effort crashing against the crossbar.

It summed up Stars’ night and from there it was all AmaZulu. They dominated the chances in the second half and finally made the breakthrough on 84 minutes when substitute Goodman Dlamini struck.

After good work on the flank from Bongani Mbhele, Dlamini headed home to hand the three points to his side and move them up to ninth in the Absa Premiership table.

Stars have now lost their unbeaten run at home which had stretched to six matches in all competitions this season.
