AmaZulu, Maritzburg draw

Ramson Zhuwawo of Amazulu battling Michael Morton of Maritzburg United (Backpage)
Durban - AmaZulu and Maritzburg United failed to find the back of the net when the two sides met in an Absa Premiership KZN derby clash at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Although collecting maximum points was vital for both sides, they lacked the creativity and composure in the last third of the pitch.

The first chance of the match came in the second minute when Mor Diouf rose to meet a corner from Felix Obada but the defender sent his header over the crossbar.

That early chance brought false hope to the supporters as the rest of the first half resembled practice with both sides being restricted to passing the ball around in the midfield and not able to deliver that dangerous final pass.

Ayanda Dlamini had a half-chance at the other end in the 17th minute but the Usuthu striker failed to hit the target, sending his shot wide on the right.

Michael Morton found himself with space on the right side in the 30th minute but failed to get a clean connection with the ball and in the end his tame shot resulted in a comfortable save for Tapuwa Kapini.

The second half saw a couple of chances created for both sides but neither had the killer instinct upfront to make it count.

The first chance after the break fell for Felix Obada when he outran the defenders to meet a long pass but his hurried left-footed shot failed to trouble the Usuthu goalkeeper.

The best chance for the home side came in the 73rd minute when Bongani Mbele played the ball across into the path of Ayanda Dlamini on the edge of the penalty area but Shuaib Walters proved to be awake as he dived to his right to make a good save.

Usuthu continued to show some initiative and they came close again four minutes later when Mbele played a through-pass to send Goodman Dlamini through on goal but he delayed his shot and his attempt was deflected off Byrone Hendricks, allowing Walters to make a save.

The visitors then had their best chance at the other end in the 83rd minute when Michael Morton beat his marker on the right side and found Kurt Lentjies just outside the box, but his thunderous shot was tipped over for a corner by Kapini.

United almost scored directly from the resulting corner but Mor Diouf's shot crashed against the crossbar.

The last 20 minutes of the match were more promising but neither side did enough to win the match and both should be satisfied with a point.
