Cape Town - Santos remain winless this season after they lost 1-0 to Ajax Cape Town at the Athlone Stadium on Wednesday night.
Overall it was an even game with the Urban Warriors enjoying the better of the first half, before the Peoples’ Team rallied hard, but without reward, for the last 35 minutes of the game.
Early play saw Ajax enjoying a slight upper-hand, looking more threatening in their attack.
This was turned into a fifth minute goal when Khama Billiat raced onto Terror Fanteni’s clever ball into the box, keeping off Pere Ariweriyai, before hammering the ball into the top corner.
Santos tried to come back into the game, but for the most part failed to make much of an impression against the Ajax defence.
The Urban Warriors always looked a threat down the wings, and also had several chances from free kicks, but could not make these count.
Santos were fairly close to finding an equaliser midway through the first stanza, but Sean Roberts did well to save from Jurie Basie’s header, following Erwin Isaacs’ cross.
The rest of the half remained evenly contested, with no real chances at either end, although for the most part it was Ajax who posed be bigger threat.
Ajax had the chance to add to the lead in the 52nd minute, but after Billiat sent in a superb cross, first Terror Fanteni and then Lebogang Manyama failed to convert in front of goal.
But as the half progressed, the Peoples’ Team began to grow in strength and mounted several promising attacks.
The first of these saw Erwin Isaacs pulling a 60th minute shot wide, and then 10 minutes later Vuyisile Wana was twice denied by Roberts.
Wana then set up a chance for Eleazar Rodgers, but Roberts was just able to keep out his near post effort.
Closing moments were action packed and edge of the seats stuff, but there were no real clear cut chances as the Urban Warriors defended with guts to ensure their first league win of the season.

Santos (4-4-2): Langeveldt; Basie, W Arendse, Ariweriyai, Bishop; Sopio, T Arendse, Kefile (Chimodzi 74‘), Armogam (Wana 57‘); Isaacs, Rodgers (Eugene 76’)
