Ajax upset at PSL's decision

Cape Town - Ajax Cape Town have expressed their disappointment at the Premier Soccer League (PSL) for not allowing them to play Liverpool on May 21.

Ajax were due to face the English giants at Cape Town Stadium on May 21, but the PSL took exception to the proposal due to the date falling within the regular South African soccer season and possibly detracting from the Nedbank Cup final, due to take place on May 25 between Kaizer Chiefs and SuperSport United.

However, Ajax will play their last PSL game on May 18 and are not participating in the Nedbank Cup final, so their season will be finished by the time the Liverpool game would have taken place.

Liverpool were then scheduled to play another team on the same date, but the 18-time English champions instead cancelled their trip.

According to the Football411 website, Ajax released a statement expressing their disappointment at the PSL's decision.

"For Ajax Cape Town and the city the fixture represented an opportunity to showcase Cape Town and have Liverpool in South Africa for the first time in 19 years.

"Regrettably, the Premier Soccer League declined to approve the fixture for that date and Liverpool has subsequently advised Ajax Cape Town that the fixture cannot go ahead.

"We are hugely disappointed that we are unable to be part of this event and to see our team and Liverpool take the field and play in front of our fantastic fans and the many Capetonians who support Liverpool," read the statement.

Liverpool also expressed their disappointing.

"This post-season fixture represented an opportunity for the club to visit supporters in South Africa for the first time in 19 years. Regrettably, the South Africa Premier Soccer League has decided that this match cannot now be played on this date and have subsequently advised Ajax Cape Town that this fixture should be cancelled," read a statement on Liverpool's website.

"We are hugely disappointed that we are unable to visit and the team cannot play in front of our terrific supporters."
