Ajax lose Daniels to Downs

Johannesburg - Ajax Cape Town on Sunday announced they had accepted an offer from Mamelodi Sundowns for dynamic central defender Clayton Daniels.

Daniels was due to be transferred to parent club Ajax Amsterdam following a recent trial period in Holland.

The turnabout came amid growing speculation over Daniels' future and a statement by the player that he felt it was "time to make a change" to further his career.

The transfer, however, appeared set to take place amid harmonious circumstances, after Ajax in a statement wished Daniels "the best of luck with his new club" and thanked him for his services.

Daniels, in turn, said he was grateful to Ajax for "making me the footballer that I am - and everything they have done to help my soccer aspirations."

Ironically, it would seem the ongoing uncertainty over another former Ajax central defender, Brazilian Eduardo Ferreira, prompted Patrice Motsepe's club to turn their interests towards Daniels.

Ferreira moved from Ajax Cape Town two season's ago but his career never took off with Sundowns.

Regarded one of the top defenders in the PSL while with Ajax, Ferreira's career had been marred by recurring injuries over the past two years.

Sundowns, who are known as "The Brazilians" will be hoping their investment in Daniels proves more rewarding than that in the Brazilian from Rio de Janeiro.

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
