Cape Town - Kaizer Chiefs lost 2-1 to Ajax Cape Town at the Cape Town Stadium on Wednesday night, despite enjoying the better of the chances on the night.
The team in gold and black came out with all guns blazing, forcing Ajax onto the back foot early on with shots from Reneilwe Letsholonyane and Siphiwe Tshabalala.
After 11 minutes the visiting side were within a whisker of the lead when Bernard Parker burst down the left and hammered in a shot which was palmed away by Sean Roberts, the ball looping up before coming back off the upright.
It certainly seemed as if a goal was due to arrive for AmaKhosi, but a foul by Ithumeleng Khune on Terror Fanteni on 20 minutes saw the Ajax marksman scoring with comfort from the penalty spot to give his team the lead.
Chiefs tried to play their way back into the game and created decent chances, but Sthembiso Ngcobo headed just wide in the 28th minute and then when the ball fell loose to Thomas Sweswe from a 36th minute corner, he slammed a volley just wide.
However, within three minutes after the restart, the game’s complexion changed dramatically as Letsholonyane made it 1-1, thanks to a perfectly placed right-footed curling shot from the edge of the box.
The run of play remained open and entertaining, with both sides happy to run at each other, although clear-cut chances remained few and far between.
As the game entered the final 15 minutes, a deflection saw the ball falling into the path of Lebogang Manyama, who kept his head to burst through on goal and fire past Khune.
Baloyi should have done better with his shot in the 85th minute, which Roberts did well to keep out.
Tinashe Nengomasha was also not far off as his header went just over the cross bar late on.
Deep into injury time the visiting side were again denied by Roberts, who pushed Lehlohonolo Majoro’s header onto the bar.
