Ajax, Supersport in stalemate

Cape Town - Terror Fanteni claimed a late equalizer in the game to prevent Ajax Cape Town from losing to SuperSport United, as they played out for a 1-1 draw at Cape Town Stadium in the opening match of the Absa Premiership.

The Urban Warriors were without Bradley Grobler and Keagan Dolly, due to problems with their clearance certificates, while new arrival Koen van de Laak made his debut.

The home side came close to scoring five minutes in, when Khama Billiat was given yards of space on the right of goal, but his shot was pushed away from goal by Davis Nkausu.

It was all Ajax in the opening quarter of the game when Billiat once again tested Ronwen Williams with his shot from outside the box in the 12th minute, before Franklin Cale struck a free-kick which went just wide of Sander Westerveld’s goal.

In the 23rd minute Edwin Gyimah was shown yellow for a late challenge, before Nathan Paulse threatened at goal, six minutes later, but Westerveld managed to gather with the aid of Nazeer Allie.

The young Zimbabwean was running riot and looked desperate for a goal when he stunned the side netting in the 36th minute.

Ashley Hartog made way for Moffat Mdluli at the start of the second half, before Toriq Losper went on a run to unleash a shot which skipped across the face of goal.

But despite their attempts at goal it was the visitors who took the lead in the 50th minute.

Sibusiso Zuma caught Westerveld way off his line to chip the ball from range into the back of the net.

Koen van de Laak let rip with a powerful shot at goal, but the impressive Williams managed to tip the ball around the angular of the goal, in the 72nd minute.

Ajax splurged a variety of chances until they eventually got it right in the 79th minute, when Terror Fanteni made himself known when he turned on the ball and sliced it into the far post to level matters.

Alcardo van Graan felt he had been pulled down in the box but the referee waved play on, as they played out to a one-all draw.
