Ajax have reached the last four of the Nedbank Cup thanks to
victories over Mainstay United (9-1 away – the biggest victory of the 2015
competition), Bloemfontein Celtic (1-0 home) and Bidvest Wits (2-1 home).
The Cape club will be looking to reach the final for the
first time in the Nedbank era, having last reached the title deciding match in
2007 when they won the now defunct Absa Cup.
As for SuperSport, they have racked up three successive home
wins over Polokwane City (4-1), Orlando Pirates and Golden Arrows (both 1-0).
This will be their first away match of the 2015 Nedbank Cup,
as they look to reach a third final in the space of four years and add to the
titles they won in 1999, 2005 and 2012.
Ajax and SuperSport have crossed swords in four previous cup
matches. The Tshwane team has claimed two outright wins, as well as one via a
penalty shootout, while the Cape side has one victory to their name.
The teams’ most recent cup clash was in the first round of
last season’s Telkom Knockout: United claimed a 2-1 win in a match which
featured two own goals (one each from Edwin Gyimah and Thulani Hlatshwayo) and
a strike from Sibusiso Khumalo.
The Urban Warriors have had the edge over Matsatsantsa this
season, claiming four points from the clubs’ two league meetings – a goalless
draw in Cape Town and the return in Polokwane which saw Ajax claim a 2-1 away
In all, the teams have clashed in 36 league and cup matches since
1999/2000. SuperSport have 14 wins compared to 12 for Ajax, while 10 matches
have been drawn. The Urban Warriors have won seven of their 19 home matches
against Matsatsantsa, suffering five defeats in the process.
Kick-off is at 20:15 on Saturday, April 25.
