Aces' late strike sinks Usuthu

Durban - Mpumalanga Black Aces have secured their first win in the PSL when they defeated AmaZulu 2-1 at the Princess Magogo Stadium on Tuesday night.

Bongi Macala cancelled Omar Hendricks opener, but Themba Zwane score in added time to secure maximum points for the visitors.

Mabhuti Khenyeza caused a lot of problems for the Usuthu defence but he saw his shot deflected wide by Willem Mwedihanga in the 4th minute, before drilling another effort wide eight minutes later.

Aces eventually opened the scoring in the 19th minute when Hendricks fired an unstoppable shot beyond Aubrey Mathibe from a long way out after dispossessing Sadney Urikhob.

Then in the 26th minute the Usuthu goalkeeper made two brilliant saves to keep his side in the game, diving to his right to keep out an effort from Khenyeza, before stopping a follow-up effort from Onyekachi Okonkwo.

The visitors had another golden opportunity to extend their lead in the 44th minute when Thabo Qalinge ran onto a pass from Khenyeza inside the box, but his goal bound shot was deflected wide by Marc van Heerden.

AmaZulu came back in the second half with more determination but Mohammed-Awal Issah was stopped in his tracks by Bafana Nhlapo as he tried to get to the other end of a great pass from Kulegani Madondo.

Substitute Nkosinathi Mthiyane then sent his shot over the crossbar in the 73rd minute, while his low cross was grabbed by Nhlapo before it could reach Sthembiso Ngcobo six minutes later.

The equaliser arrived in the 82nd minute from the home side’s best move of the match when Bongani Ndulula found Ngcobo, who then set up Macala to fire home from the right side of the box.

However, it wasn’t to be for Craig Rosslee’s side as Aces caught them out of shape in the second minute of added time; Khenyeza forced a low save from Mathibe at the near post, but Zwane was on hand to bury the rebound.
