PSL threaten to scrap NFD

Johannesburg - The National First Division could soon be a thing of the past in South Africa after the organisation infuriated the Premier Soccer League by demanding a bigger slice of the financial pie.

The 16 NFD clubs had boycotted the most recent PSL meeting after demanding a bigger share of television and sponsorship revenue ahead of the new season.

However, the PSL have been left thoroughly unimpressed with the organisation's tactics and look unwilling to offer the second division teams anything more than the R200 000 monthly grant they each already receive.

Furthermore, the NFD maybe be told to go their own way in terms of gaining financial support to maintain the running of the division.

"It's a tough call because from a sporting perspective it is good to have a second tier to our league," a senior PSL official is quoted as saying in The Sowetan.

"But on the other hand, what do the NFD clubs bring us? There are no sponsors queuing up and TV is not interested.

"They bring nothing to the table but they want to share the cake. It's unrealistic."
