Johannesburg - Bafana Bafana’s two-goal hero against Spain Katlego Mphela says he needs more time in the national team to prove that he is one of the best strikers around.
The Mamelodi Sundowns striker, who was a surprise inclusion in coach Joel Santana’s Confederation Cup squad, came off the bench to score two goals which unfortunately were not enough to stop Spain winning Sunday’s third place play-off 3-2.
Speaking after the game Katlego says that all he needs is more playing time so that he can prove his critics wrong.
“I think I did very well judging by the number of games I played in the tournament. All the players were good, but if I was given more time I could have done better.”
Mphela’s inclusion into the 30 member squad was initially received with mixed reaction by fans as well as the media but, he says, that did not dampen his spirits.
“Criticism should not get you down; instead it should lift you up and make you want to do better than what people think about you.
“Criticism should encourage you to perform above yourself as that is the only way to win your respect back.
“I was doing it for my country and I am proud that I scored, but sad that we lost the game,” he adds.
