Moon's murder trial underway

Johannesburg - The State called an on-duty policeman to the stand on Thursday in the case against former Bafana Bafana star Bryce Moon, who is appearing in the Randburg Magistrate's Court in connection with an accident in 2009 in which a woman died.

Lieutenant-Colonel Sthembiso Mpungose was on duty the night of the accident, on June 29 2009 in Sandton.

Mpungose told the court he was called out to a house-robbery and was travelling on Katherine street when he saw a silver-grey Mercedes-Benz playing "loud music" and "having loud noise."

He said the car was travelling at such a high speed he thought it might hit his car.

Mpungose had been travelling in the left lane, but moved into the right lane "to give a chance for the car to move."

The two cars approached a robot. Mpungose said he stopped, but the Mercedes-Benz went through "at caution."

The policeman came across the accident scene about 500 metres from the robot. The car had hit a tree.

The trial was delayed earlier on Thursday morning because of problems with the recording equipment in court.

Moon faces a charge of murder, alternatively culpable homicide.

His car allegedly hit Mavis Ncube, who died in hospital from head injuries, when he failed to negotiate a bend in Sandhurst.

He was returning home from a party with his then Bafana team-mates.
