The South African national soccer captain Aaron “Mbazo” Mokoena is to launch a foundation at the end of May and in the United Kingdom later this year to coincide with the country hosting the FIFA Confederation Cup.
The Aaron Mokoena Foundation will be launched in Sedibeng on May 28 with a soccer tournament in Boipatong for Primary and Secondary schools invited to take part in a fun-filled afternoon of football targeting girls and boys between the ages of 5-16 years.
“The second event will see a formal element of the launch with specially invited guests from the government, football, media and those from the wider world of sport and business and would be limited to only 150 guests,” said a spokesperson for the Aaron Mokoena Foundation.
“There will also be a corporate launch in Johannesburg in early June. This event will coincide with the FIFA Confederation Cup. It will also be used to raise funds for the Foundation’s delivery programmes.”
In addition, there will also be Road shows across the country aimed at raising awareness of the Foundation’s programmes and engage with local communities and identify how best to shape local delivery.
An Aaron Mokoena 2010 World Cup Celebrity Dinner as well as a Junior League for both boys and girls is planned. But the Bafana Bafana captain will release more details about his ambitious programmes aimed at uplifting his communities when he arrives at the end of the English Premiership at the end of May.
Mokoena, who grew up in the dusty streets of Sebokeng but through football was able to get out of the ghetto and play for some of the world’s top clubs, wants to use the Aaron Mokoena Foundation to replicate and improve opportunities for children and young people to access high quality football experiences in South Africa.
Underpinning the Foundation’s ethos is an understanding of the role football can play not only creating and improving the skills and performances of young players but also the key role football can play as a mechanism that plays a uniquely broader role in society by bringing communities together.
This is the Blackburn Rovers player’ way of ploughing back into the community and while at the same time uplifting and developing young boys and girls from across the country while also discouraging them from engaging in anti-social behavior but to actively take part in sport.
