Modise vies for CAF award

Johannesburg - Banyana Banyana's Portia Modise has been nominated for the African Women's Footballer of the Year award.

Modise, one of three players in line for the prestigious accolade, scored South Africa's only goal at the London Olympic Games, netting a superb strike from nearly 50 metres out in their opening group match against Sweden.

She also played a key role in Banyana's run to the final of the African Women's Championship in Equatorial Guinea last month.

"I am delighted that my performances have been recognised in what has been one of Banyana Banyana's busiest and most successful years in the national team's history," Modise said.

Modise was nominated alongside 15-year-old Nigerian Chinwendu Ihezuo, who scored six goals in the Under-17 women's World Cup this year, and Equatorial Guinea playmaker Genoveva Anoman, who netted six times to help her country clinch the African women's title.

The 2012 Confederation of African Football (CAF) award winners will be announced in Accra, Ghana, on December 20.
