Modise hurting at Cup exit

Johannesburg - Mamelodi Sundowns captain Teko Modise cut a dejected figure after his team's MTN8 semi-final elimination at the weekend.

The Brazilians were denied a spot in the final by Moroka Swallows, with the Dube Birds progressing 6-5 on aggregate following a 3-2 victory in Dobsonville in the second-leg on Sunday.

Modise, a two-time PSL footballer of the year, has never won league or cup honours - much to his obvious frustration.

"It's very disappointing. We can't be talking about this same thing year after year," he said in the Sowetan when quizzed on the topic.

"We had the game in our hands but conceded two silly goals yet again and made it difficult for ourselves to come back.

"We need to now look at ourselves. We need to come back positively."

The 29-year-old netted with a wonderful free-kick against the Birds but only after his side were already 3-0 down. Ex-Downs midfielder Lerato Chabangu bagged a brace before Bennett Chenene added a third, while Nyasha Mushekwi reduced the deficit in injury time.

Swallows will contest cup honours with SuperSport United, who beat holders Orlando Pirates 3-0.

No! I think the smart thing to do is start again with a younger skipper ...

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
