Ephraim 'Shakes' Mashaba (Gallo)

Johannesburg - Ephraim 'Shakes' Mashaba could become one of the assistants to new Bafana Bafana coach Pitso Mosimane.

According to the Sowetan website, Mashaba - who coached the national team from 2002 to 2004 - has been recommended for the post by SAFA's technical committee, which includes Gavin Hunt, Jomo Sono and Ted Dumitru.

SAFA technical committee conveyor, Fanyana Sebanyoni, is quoted as saying the proposal will be shortly discussed by the national executive committee.

"We want to see continuity in all the national teams," said Sibanyoni.

"Pitso will oversee all the programmes of [all] our teams and must know what is happening at all times."

Mashaba, who is the current U-23 coach, has previously voiced his support for Mosimane's appointment.

He said: "Pitso has been with Bafana Bafana for four years and it's only fair that he be given the job. I will be available to assist him wherever my expertise are needed."

@Worried you are you so worried? Is Bra Shakes not a local? Since Under 23 team is the feeder team for the national team, it does make sense to have Jingles and Shakes working together. The only worry is whether the duo will be able to work together. I hope there won't be any back- stabbing.

Off ur hand now from JOMO sono.

SAFA allowed Pereira to nominate his own assistant; why dictate to Pitso who his assistant should be. Allow Pitso the same leeway to create a formidable team for his vision, and he will progress. If people are thrown in his office and space then he might not be as effective. Please respect Pisto and let HIM create his own functional team....

EXCELLENT MOVE BECAUSE BRA SHAKES HAS BEEN AROUND FOR A LONG TIME
TIBLA7/19/2010 11:26 AM
I would assume that people like Comrade either have short memories or simply dont know the facts of our soccer, lest they forget that the only time south africa particpated in the olympics was when shakes was the under 23 coach, he is the only coach to havce beaten brazil in a competitive match, ignorant people. if your football federation was working the entire team should have been the one competing in June. all these boys, mccarthy, fortune rogue as they, they played for the country and shakes got the best out of them

As they say in Afrikaan.....wat weet a mol van kars. Goodbye Bafana.....the soccer mafia still wants to control the national team so really it does not matter who the coach, tehnical team or manager is...they will have to take orders from the mafia. there is no hope for our soccer as Pitso will be told who to select and we all know who 'they' will be.

Shakes as assistant to the Senior team. Do we still have U-23s? I've always had the opinion that the National U-23 (or let me call it the National Junior Team) head coach should be the assistant coach to the National Senior Team. Shakes previously did well with the U-23 team. When else did they qualify for the Olympics? Not sure? I think he should be re-assigned to the U-23 (junior), and then coupled to the Senior team. He should then ensure that the U-23 (junior) players are "groomed" into the requirements of Senior international football. With so many youngsters performing well at international level, I think there should be a U-21 age group only, no U-23.

Ayoba and Red Wine are very right. Shakes is the best man to assist Pitso. In fact, he should have been the hrsd coach. His record is by far the best of all former Bafana coaches. Forward with the Pitso/Shakes combination!

Let the power rest with the coach, not the politicians Best of luck to the new coaches, Give them the time and opportunity to build a winning team.

I really do not agree with the so called technical team. I think Pitso must select his own team that he can work with. The old regime must remain where the old regime is-retirement houses. They had their fair share and it is time for a young coach with modern game knowledge to lead the team. The old regime will only rail road Pitso into their stupid mentality and we end up loosing games like they did. Pitso be your own man a create your own work structure, leave all these old people to watch from the sides-i think all they want is just gravy train.

If Bra Shakes can be kept as under 23 Head Coach as well that will ensure continuity for the national teams,i hope Pitso's programme / plan includes uniformity for all national teams.
Andy7/19/2010 10:26 AM
Bafana need to move forward. What can this so-called Technical team & Shakes contribute to the modern game. What has the under - 23 team achieved. Pitso must chose his own team.

WTF!Not him again...there goes neighborhood down the drains again. Can someone tell me when have this palooka won a major cup or tournament in recent 12yrs?He can't even win a trophy with the youngsters.God help SA(Henna) over the highway...kiss 2012 and swc 2014 goodby...do we always have to screw-up what Perreira have left behind for you houtkoppe? The ancestors must be turning in there graves and look upon this nation with utter disgust.

Good decision, remember that Shakes is one of the successful local coached. You look at his record and it speak volumes about the man.Out of all the number of games bafana played under him it was impressive. The only sin he committed according to the soccer mafias was the OMMISSION of Bernie. Shakes could not bow to the demands of bernie to come and play only when bafana2 was playing against European teams. So for his refusal to select bernie had fired from his job by those mafias.YOu can't keep the strong man down.So with the new leadership at SAFA i wish they all give the technical staff all the support they require, unlike the former powers. You the man Shakes, ha ku seketela.
Lily White7/19/2010 9:31 AM
Gravy train keeps on rolling.
Ayoba7/19/2010 9:29 AM
Great news, I would not mind even if he is the head coach and Pitso is the assistant...
Jomal7/19/2010 9:25 AM
Not a wise move, would prefer him at under 23 to build a strong feeder to the senior team, that's the kind of support Pitso need.
Sabelo Mpana7/19/2010 9:20 AM
Shakes is the right man to assist Pitso I hope there won't be bad blood were you find an assistant wanting to be a head coach. I beleive the appointment will be great for the team only if our guys could stick to profesionalism.
DC7/19/2010 9:20 AM
WHAT,Please no. Yes, we need to give people a chance, but Shakes has been there and done nothing. He is a dinosaur. Why does Pitso want him there anyway, or was this a "technical commitee" decision? If Pitso does well, the credit will go to Shakes & if he performs badly, Shakes becomes the scapegoat. So Pitso, get a young and vibrant assistant who could realy assist, not just sit on the bench and look like an Egyptian Mummy.Go for someone like Tovey. Have we even heard anything from The under 23 team recently? Mahaba needs a job, this is why he wants this 1.The same with Jomo Sono. Go worry about your team which you named after your big ego, JOMO Cosmos and leave the national side alone. You cannot keep your own team afloat, so im shoked that you are even consulted when making top decisions. Clive, time to retire my friend. Go develop the youth now.
Eish Bra J 7/19/2010 9:11 AM
surely Bra J needs to be still for some time instead of dishing up his opinions left and right as this is empty until Cosmos can at least show sustainability in the top flight. please man Bra J focus elsewhere instead of spewing bile everywwhere
SUPPORTER7/19/2010 8:57 AM
PLEASE PLEASE, get rid off old wood. I agree we need a local coach but get a new team to help the guys,
neo7/19/2010 8:56 AM
given that shakes has a good record with the national team and frankly pitso has built supersport with the help of his management i see no reason to moan even before we play any game.it sickens me that even novices and armchair critics are experts whereas they themselves can point to nothing as an achievement.GIVE THESE GUYS A CHANCE.
Tebo7/19/2010 8:42 AM
Please not Bro J again. My friendly advice, he must give all his undivided attention to Cosmos.
Red Wine7/19/2010 8:33 AM
Shakes is an appropriate man for the assistant Job and Head Coach in case PITSO is not available. This man has been successful with the young teams. He is respected by many. The two will complement each other.
BAFANA7/19/2010 8:26 AM
Oh No. Please no. Blast from the past. The he begins to fight with Pitso: Hey Pitso I am older than you, I have been around longer than you, than we havea mess.
