Lucky aiming for '95 repeat

Johannesburg - Lucky Lekgwathi aims to emulate Orlando Pirates' class of '95 and become club champions of Africa again.

Fifteen years ago, the Sea Robbers enjoyed arguably their finest hour when Jerry Sikhosana fired the team to African Champions Cup glory at the expense of Ivorian giants ASEC Abidjan.

And club skipper, Lekgwathi, is confident Pirates can qualify for next year's edition by winning the league this season, having last won it in 2002/03.

"I am still convinced that we can go all the way and win our league, and qualify for the Champions League [formerly the Champions Cup]," he told Sunshine Press.

"Pirates have a very reach history when it comes to Champions League. We want to emulate what the class of '95 achieved."

Lekgwathi added that Pirates' recent MTN8 success - their first major cup in seven years - has inspired the team.

"I see the guys working their socks off at training every week," he revealed.

"It leaves me convinced if you work hard, you will always be rewarded and finally all the hard work we have been putting in training seems to be paying off.

"We always had a quality team but now the spirit is even greater."

Bucs, who reached the last-eight of the Telkom Knockout this past weekend, are currently fifth on the league table and will next face second-placed Ajax Cape Town at Orlando Stadium on Saturday.
