Khumalo sued for R500 000

Johannesburg - Former Bafana Bafana star Doctor Khumalo has been found guilty of reckless and negligent driving three years after being involved in an accident with a minibus taxi in which several people were injured, the Sowetan reported on Friday.

Khumalo appeared in the Roodepoort Magistrate's Court on Thursday and was fined R6 000 or 12 months imprisonment.

Khumalo's BMW Z4 collided with a minibus taxi near the Maraisburg off-ramp on the N1 north in Johannesburg on May 4, 2008.

The taxi overturned and the jaws-of-life had to be used to free a female passenger in Khumalo's car.

Sinah Shongwe, Bongani Baloyi and Elizabeth Slater were passengers in the taxi. Shongwe is believed to have died from injuries related to the accident about two weeks ago.

Taxi driver Willy Sanyane escaped with minor injuries. Sanyane said he was not happy with the sentence.

"The case took long to be finalised. Khumalo missed court appearances. The fine is a slap on the wrist. I don't think an ordinary person would have been given a fine. They would probably be in jail," he said.

Slater, who suffered back and leg injuries said: "It's so sad that we will not get a cent from the fine. What is R6 000 to Doctor Khumalo? He has a lot of money."

According to the Sowetan, the owner of the minibus taxi is now suing Khumalo for loss of income.

Perry Kgasoane is suing Khumalo for more than R500 000 for income lost over the three-year period.
