Khumalo escapes drunk charge

Johannesburg - A Roodepoort court has dismissed a drunken driving charge against former Bafana Bafana star Doctor Khumalo, The Star newspaper reported on Thursday.

However, a charge of reckless or negligent driving still stood.

Magistrate Susan du Pisane dismissed the drunken driving charge in the Roodepoort Magistrate's Court in Johannesburg on Wednesday, after evidence from a blood sample was not presented by the State.

The defence had made an application to the court to drop the charge.

Khumalo's lawyer, Johan Pretorius, reportedly suggested that the blood samples "may have been tampered with".

But the State had argued that several witnesses testified Khumalo had smelt of alcohol, had bloodshot eyes and slurred speech when his car collided with a taxi on the N1 in Johannesburg in May 2008.

Nobody was killed in the crash but several people, including a pregnant woman, were seriously injured.

Khumalo retired from soccer in 2004 after starting his career for Kaizer Chiefs in 1986, before becoming the star midfielder of the national team.
