Cape Town -
KickOff.com can reveal that Brazilian Carlos Alberto Parreira is the new Bafana Bafana coach.
According a SAFA official who wanted to remain anonymous, Parreira arrived in the country on Friday morning to take his job as Bafana coach in preparations for the World Cup to be hosted by South Africa next year.
“Parreira arrived in the country on Friday morning together with Sipho Nkumane (Bafana Bafana manager),” he added.
SuperSport United coach Gavin Hunt who was also touted to be among the favourites for the position vacated by Joel Santana, in the race to become new coach for Bafana also confirmed that SAFA had already made an appointment.
“I am staying with SuperSport United and SAFA have appointed another new coach,” said Hunt after United’s training session in Pretoria on Friday morning.
Hunt was among the many critics who were opposed to the return of the 66-year-old mentor.
Reports from the Brazilian media indicate that 2010 Chief Executive Danny Jordaan brokered the deal after he flew into Rio de Janeiro on Thursday following a meeting on Wednesday with United Nations Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon.
Jordaan was one of the people who first negotiated with Parreira for his services more than three years ago.
Earlier this week Parreira admitted that he had been approached by SAFA and that at that stage he did not know whom he would be meeting and when.
Late on Thursday, he was still playing his cards close to his chest. “There is an interest but nothing definitive. I can't release any declaration, for the moment there is no agreement,” was all he would say.
Now in South Africa, the indications are that he will be unveiled at SAFA executive meeting which is underway in Kempton Park.
