BidVest Wits romped to a 6-0 victory over Seychelles side Light Stars in their Caf Confederation Cup clash in Johannesburg on Saturday evening but the victory could have come at a cost after Sibusiso Vilakazi limped off early on.
According SuperSport.com, Vilakazi had opened the scoring for the home side with goals also coming from Keoikantse Mosiatlhaga, Vincent Pule, Jucie Lupeta, birthday boy Dillon Sheppard and 17-year-old Liam Jordan, his first senior goal.
The Clever Boys completed a 9-0 aggregate win with some ease and now face Tanzanian side Azam in the next round.
But coach Gavin Hunt will be sweating over the fitness of Vilakazi, with crucial league and Nedbank Cup matches in the next month.
Vilakazi opened the scoring with a powerful run breaching the Light Stars defence and allowing for a neat finish on 12 minutes.
But having earlier taken a knock to his knee, he was replaced four minutes later in some discomfort.
Wits totally dominated possession after that and after Portuguese striker Jucie Lupeta had missed a simple headed chance, they did double their advantage on 35 minutes.
Mosiatlhaga, who also claimed the first senior goal of his career, curled in a free-kick that beat everybody and found its way into the net.
And four minutes later it was 3-0 when Pule was superbly teed-up by Lupeta with a back-heel and smashed the ball home.
Jordan was introduced for the second half and took just 12 minutes to notch his goal after Lupeta again was the provider with a strong run and pass.
And the big striker finally got the goal his all-round performance deserved when he netted with three minutes remaining, his first for the club since signing at the start of the season.
Sheppard netted on his 37th birthday with Lupeta again the provider with a neat flick into his path.
