UEFA picks ref from Euro 2012 controversy

Paris - Viktor Kassai has been selected to referee the European Championship opening match on Friday, four years after his exit from Euro 2012 following a mistake which helped ensure goal-line technology is used in France.

UEFA says Kassai and his assistants from Hungary will officiate the France match against Romania at the Stade de France in Paris.

Four years ago, Kassai did not award co-host Ukraine a goal against England when Marko Devic's shot crossed the line before being cleared.

England kept its 1-0 lead in the group-stage match and advanced to the quarterfinals instead of Ukraine.

UEFA did not blame Kassai for a judgment by his assistant beside the goal but said he would not referee another Euro 2012 match.

The Hawk-Eye goal-line system will be used at Euro 2016.
