Cape Town - Electronic Arts (EA) Sports has released its first role-playing game in the form of FIFA 17 - The Journey. The next iteration of the popular football series will feature a “story mode”.
The game introduces a cinematic simulation story mode, a first for EA Sports, which focuses on the life of rising Premier League footballer Alex Hunter.
According to EA Sports website, the player takes on the role of Hunter as he battles his way for a English Premier League team and make his mark in the sport.
Hunter’s performance and decisions, both off and on the pitch, will affect his football career. This allows for a unique storyline with multiple playthroughs.
In the trailer published on YouTube, Hunter is introduced in Manchester United-guise.
Players can live out the life of a football star from deciding on which manager should represent Hunter to purchasing his first apartment. Make the wrong choice and your career could be over sooner than you think.
Some notable football players are featured in the game such as Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Kane and Dele Alli, Manchester United’s wonder boy Marcus Rashford and West Ham United’s Reece Oxford.

Fifa 2017 - The Journey has already sparked tons of interest from soccer fans and gamers alike. Why has the series waited this long to introduce this feature? And will we see a trend of story mode following in future sport games?
However, there is a tainted history that not all sport games have succeeded along - EA Cricket was discontinued in 2007 and EA Rugby similarly canned in 2008 due to poor sales.
This illustrates the impact a niche sport can have on a global scale, football or soccer has an appeal and universal backdrop, whereas a sport such as cricket is only played in Commonwealth countries, despite it being the biggest sport in one of the most populated countries in the world.
Would you play EA Rugby story mode?
Sport24 readers, would you like to play a similar role-playing mode in other EA Sports titles? Perhaps as a young rugby fullback hoping to join the Springboks or a talented spin-bowler battling for his place among the Proteas? Email us and let us know.
Fifa 2017 - The Journey is set to be released on September 29 on Xbox One, Xbox 360, Play Station 3, Play Station 4 and PC.
